Delivering Volumetric Concrete Inside B&M Bedford

Delivering Volumetric Concrete Inside B&M Bedford

Pouring a Lift Shaft Pit Inside a Bedford Retail Store Overnight

Delivering volumetric concrete inside B&M Bedford proved to be a complex operation for the Custom Concrete team. The contractor needed a heavy structural base poured for a retrofitted lift shaft. Work had to take place overnight so that normal retail hours wouldn’t be disrupted.

The major issue we faced wasn’t just timing, though; it was moving wet concrete from the street, through double doors, and down narrow shop aisles without damaging the stock or the fixtures.

We couldn’t risk running long ground lines or risking blowouts with heavy pumps across the retail floors, so we used a compact 1-tonne JCB high-tip dumper to shuttle the material on a continuous loop fed directly by our volumetric truck.

Outside, our truck mixed the precise quantities as needed, keeping material fresh and workable. Inside, the dumper moved through the main shop floor, maneuvering through tight turns between display endcaps. Batching the concrete on-site meant we could adjust the production speed to match the placement rate, cutting waiting times outside and stopping the concrete from stiffening in the hopper.

The pour site was a square excavation cut through the store slab to house the new lift. Wrapped in damp-proof lining and reinforced with steel starter bars, the pit was ready for a dense, well-compacted mix to handle future loads.

The ground team raked each batch evenly into the formwork, vibrating out trapped air as they filled the profile. We mixed the final partial yardage to top off the pit exactly level with the shuttering line. There was no surplus concrete, no waste, and no slurry contaminating the shop floor.

When the B&M store opened its doors as usual in the morning, the customers wouldn’t have any idea of the work we had carried out overnight.
