Getting Concrete on Site: Why the Method of Delivery Matters as Much as the Mix
Deciding between the different types of concrete delivery isn’t just about how the concrete is transported. In fact, most project delays happen because nobody planned how the wet concrete was actually going to get from the truck into the formwork.
Concrete weighs roughly 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre. Once water hits cement, the curing clock starts ticking. If your delivery method doesn’t match up with your site access, labour force, and pour sequence, you risk cold joints, ruined driveways, and compromised durability.

Transport vs Placement – A Quick Reference
Before booking a pour, you need to look at both the transport vehicle and the placement route. A standard drum mixer cannot discharge directly into a back garden foundation 40 metres from the road, just as a line pump won’t fix an unworkable, flash-setting mix.

How Your Concrete Arrives – Volumetric Mixers vs Drum Ready-Mix

The vehicle that arrives at your gate determines the workability window you have, your flexibility on the day, and how you are billed.
1. Drum Transit Mixers (Central Batching)
With ready-mix drum trucks, water, aggregate, and cement are batched at an off-site plant.
- The 90-Minute Hydration Clock – Under BS 8500 / BS EN 206, the hydration process begins the moment the water makes contact with the cement at the batching plant. Which means that you have a maximum window of 90 to 120 minutes to transport, discharge, place, and compact the load.
- Slump Loss & ‘Tempering’ Risks – If the truck gets caught in traffic or your site prep runs late, the concrete begins to stiffen in the drum. Drivers are often tempted to add site water (‘tempering’) to restore workability. While this makes the mix easier to rake, it compromises the water-cement ratio, reducing the final compressive strength and the durability of the slab.
- Fixed Batch Volumes – What is loaded at the plant is what you get. If you under-order by 0.5m³, you face a second delivery fee and a cold joint. If you over-order, you pay to dispose of the excess.
2. Volumetric Mobile Batching (Mixed On-Site)
Volumetric trucks are self-contained, mobile batching plants carrying dry sand, stone, cement, and water in separate compartments.
- Fresh Concrete – Dry materials are fed into a continuous mixing auger at the rear of the truck only when the site is fully prepped to receive it. The concrete is seconds old when it enters your formwork, giving you maximum working time for placement, tamping, and power-floating.
- Exact Metering – The truck’s digital counters measure exact production. If your trench takes 4.3m³ instead of the estimated 5.0m³, the operator stops the auger. You only pay for 4.3m³, with no wet waste left on your driveway.
- Mix Adaptability – Because the materials stay dry until the pour, an operator can change the mix design mid-visit. You can pour a dry, low-slump mix (such as a C20 / S1) for kerb backing or mass trench fill, and immediately adjust the calibration to a fluid C35 (S3/S4) mix with polypropylene fibres for an internal structural slab – all from the same vehicle on one ticket.
Four Concrete Placement Methods



Once the concrete delivery truck is parked, you need an unbroken path to the pour face. Picking the wrong placement method will cause the concrete to set before it is levelled, resulting in structural defects.
- Direct Chute Pouring – Every truck carries clip-on chutes. Gravity-fed chutes, though, have a maximum reach of 2.5 to 3.5 metres from the back of the vehicle. Which means you need direct, solid vehicle access immediately next to your footings. The ground must be stable enough to hold a loaded vehicle without risk of trench collapse.
- Ground-Line Pumps – When access is blocked by narrow side passages, fences, or finished interior floors, a line pump is the solution. It’s made up of connected heavy-duty flexible pipes along the ground, routing concrete through doorways, around corners, and up to 100+ metres into back gardens or commercial units. It delivers a steady, controlled flow directly into the forms without damaging landscaping or interior flooring.
- Hydraulic Boom Pumps – For commercial projects, multi-storey structures, or residential extensions blocked by an entire house with no ground access, a boom pump lifts the delivery line up and over the building using an articulated hydraulic arm. This eliminates manual handling entirely and places concrete at rates up to 1m³ per minute.
- Manual Barrow / Dumper Runs – Wheelbarrows can only really be used for small volumes (under 2m³) over short, flat, smooth distances. A single cubic metre of concrete requires roughly 15 to 20 full wheelbarrow trips. Moving 6m³ manually requires over 100 heavy barrow runs. So on a warm day, the first barrows will begin to set before the last barrow is poured, guaranteeing cold joints.
Part-Load and Waiting-Time Fees, and Waste
The price per cubic metre on a quote is rarely the total price you pay if site logistics fail. Traditional ready-mix delivery models carry hidden penalty costs designed to protect the supplier’s fleet schedule.
- Part-Load Penalties – Drum trucks carry up to 8m³. If you only need 3m³ for a garage base, ready-mix suppliers will apply a heavy ‘part-load surcharge’ to cover the cost of running a partially empty drum.
- Waiting Time Charges – Ready-mix drum suppliers operate on rigid delivery schedules. Most contracts allow 30 to 45 minutes of free discharge time on site. If you are barrowing concrete around a house and exceed this window, suppliers charge £1.50 to £3.00+ per minute in waiting time fees. A slow barrow team can quickly add hundreds of pounds to the invoice.
- Surplus Concrete – If you over-order a drum mix to play it safe, you can’t simply leave the excess on the road. The driver must take it back or dump it on site. Returning wet concrete to a batch plant often incurs an environmental ‘return and disposal’ surcharge. With on-site volumetric mixing, production ceases instantly when the formwork is full, eliminating return fees entirely.
Preparing for Concrete Delivery Checklist
A standard 8-wheel volumetric or drum truck is a massive piece of plant machinery. Before booking a delivery date, check your access route against the following checklist.
- Clearance Dimensions – Make sure that your access route provides a minimum of 10 metres in vehicle length, 3.0 metres in width (including wing mirrors), and 4.0 metres in overhead clearance. Check for low phone lines, overhanging tree branches, and building soffits.
- Axle Weights & Ground-Bearing Capacity – A fully loaded 8-wheel concrete lorry has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of up to 32 tonnes. It will easily crack domestic block paving, shatter thin tarmac drives, and crush unreinforced drainage pipes. If crossing soft ground, you must lay certified steel road plates or heavy-duty trackway mats to avoid sinking the chassis.
- Environment Agency Washout Regulations – Under UK environmental law, alkaline concrete washwater must never enter storm drains, surface water, or open ground. Traditional drum mixers need tens of litres of water to wash down their main discharge hoppers and chutes, which means an on-site, lined wash-out skip. Volumetric mixers require only a small, localised cleanout of the mixing auger, which can be discharged cleanly into a single wheelbarrow or plastic washout tray.
A successful pour comes down to matching the delivery vehicle and placement tool to your specific site boundaries. If access is tight, the volume uncertain, or you need multiple mix designs across the day, batching on-site via volumetric delivery removes the pressure of the ticking clock, eliminates part-load fees, and keeps you fully in control of the finished structure.

As a rule, an 8-wheel concrete truck carrying a full load weighs up to 32 tonnes. Domestic block paving is typically laid on a sand bed over a standard sub-base designed for 2-tonne family cars.
Putting a 32-tonne vehicle on it will almost certainly sink the blocks, shear the edge restraints, or crack buried PVC drainage pipes underneath. If your driveway cannot take a heavy commercial truck, it will have to stay on the road, and you should use a ground-line pump or a barrow run with 18mm ply boards.
Light drizzle is manageable, but standing rainwater will ruin your finished surface. If water pools on fresh concrete, you should never work or trowel it back into the paste as this will weaken the water-cement ratio on the top layer. The solution is to keep heavy-duty 1000-gauge polythene sheeting rolled up nearby so you can cover sections the moment they are levelled.
